Rep. Tom Reed Endorses Donald Trump

Rep. Tom Reed (R-Corning) picked his pony for the 2016 presidential election on Wednesday, after weeks of being hounded by reporters about his intentions.

Citing his confidence in the wisdom of Republican voters, Reed called for his party to unite behind the candidacy of Donald Trump.

Reed initially backed former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who dropped out of the race in February.

"As the people vote, it has become clear more Republicans favor Donald Trump than any other candidate," Reed said.

The congressman believes that Trump will draw a clear contrast between himself and Democrats on the issues as the election approaches in just eight months.

"The United States simply cannot have someone in the White House that will continue the failed foreign policy and economic agenda of Barack Obama," Reed said

According to Reed, a coalescing of the party around Trump now would allow a more issues focused campaign.

"Now is the time to unite behind the candidate who I believe will be our nominee, Donald Trump," he said. "We must move beyond the bombastic rhetoric to positive discussion about creating jobs and improving the lives of all Americans. We all care about improving people's lives — that should always be our focus. I will use my voice to influence all Republican candidates at all levels to focus on issues and positive solutions for all Americans."

Pressure has been ratcheted up on the New York Republican delegation in the last week as Trump continues to dominate state primaries nationwide, winning four of five contests on Tuesday in Illinois, Missouri, Florida and North Carolina.

Former Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Palidino of Buffalo called on New York's Congressional Republicans to back Trump, a call Reed reportedly rejected at the time.

"We're weighing to see where our support will go, Donald Trump is a front-runner for the nomination, and his candidacy is one we are taking very seriously," Reed told reporters on Monday.

Reed's Democratic challenger, John Plumb of Randoph, lambasted the endorsement.

"This is yet another example of Tom Reed putting politics before country. If he were really interested in moving 'beyond the bombastic rhetoric,' he would not have made such a reckless choice. This is exactly why we need a new representative in Washington, DC."

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) seconded the notion that endorsing Trump was "reckless."

“Now that Tom Reed is backing Donald Trump, he will have to spend the rest of the election year defending Trump’s bombastic rhetoric that divides our country, incites violence, tramples on the Constitution and Republican national security experts warn would make America less safe,” said Bryan Lesswing, a committee spokesperson.

“It’s no surprise that Tom Reed has given his full-throated endorsement of Donald Trump and his dangerous views that make America less safe, as Reed himself recklessly threatened our national security when he voted to shut down the Department of Homeland Security. Given their shared records, New Yorkers should have doubts about whether Donald Trump and Tom Reed can keep our country safe.”
